Ubuntu – Keyboard shortcuts stop working after upgrading to Ubuntu 17.10

I upgraded to Ubuntu 17.10 and wanted to boot with the unity environment, but when I did, I noticed that the keyboard shortcuts like Ctrl+Alt+T for the terminal were not working(only when I boot in unity).

How can I fix that?

The comments on the bug linked there suggest to switch from LightDM to GDM3 until the bug is fixed.

Run sudo apt-get install gdm, and then your password when prompted, or run sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm. (Taken from here)

There are several ubuntu bugs in launchpad about keyboard shortcuts settings being reset to default.

It seems that when you switch the 'Backend' setting to 'Flat-file Configuration Backend' in CompizConfig Settings Manager under 'Preferences', the keyboard shortcuts changes seem persistent. You'll have to do a unity --replace for the changes to take affect.

Your gnome-settings-daemon isn't starting on boot, for some reason. The workaround to that is to add gnome-settings-daemon to Startup Applications or add it as a .desktop entry, into /home/yourusername/.config/autostart/ directory. The .desktop entry could be named gnome-settings-daemon.desktop and look something like this:

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Exec=gnome-settings-daemon
Hidden=false
Name=gnome-setting-daemon

This is my guess on why that daemon isn't starting: Ubuntu 15.04 , from what I've heard, has switched for different system for starting processes at boot - there used to be upstart and 14.04 (which is what I use) has that. Meanwhile 15.04 uses systemd . My guess is that this transition has broke some things, but hopefully by the time we get to next LTS release, everything will be fixed
