Trying to install Mint 17 Cinnamon via VirtualBox on my MBP OSX10.9.4, with 3 different discs (various makes) made on several machines (Win and Linux). I was able to deploy vm with CentOS 6.4 with a similarly made disc without problems. Mint discs get rejected with error "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." Any ideas?

It sounds as if you created an empty disk image. To create an ISO/disk image of your disk you have to select the volume (selecting the drive may work too) in the left pane of "Disk Utility" and then click the icon "New Image" or «File» → «New» → «Disk Image from "XYZ your volume name"»
For CD/DVD-ISOs make sure to select "DVD/CD master" as Image Format in the upcoming dialogue and no encryption.
Now your CD or DVD will be saved as an ISO-image with the extension .cdr - you can rename it to .iso if needed.
Have you checked that it listening on the correct network interface? If connecting to localhost:21 works, but connecting to your LAN IP does not, it's likely just a misconfiguration. You can confirm with something like this:
$ netstat -an | grep LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 *.21 *.* LISTEN
You want to see *.21 or 0.0.0.0.21 or 192.168.0.x.21.
If you see ::1.21 or 127.0.0.1.21 then it's only listening on the localhost interface and won't be reachable from other systems.
I couldn't reproduce your problem on my Yosemite system; when I ran ftpd with the arguments you provided, it correctly listened on all interfaces (*.21).

From your question it sounds like you are downloading the ISO file and burning it to a CD or DVD. This isn't necessary.
Download the ISO file from the Mint website.
Then within VirtualBox create a new VM entering the various properties like memory size, hard drive, etc.
Once the VM is created, open up the Settings for the VM, go to the Storage tab and select the Empty CD drive. Click the light CD image on the right hand side and select "Choose a virtual CD/DVD disk file...". Then locate and select the ISO image you downloaded from the Mint website.
Close the Settings dialog and Start the VM. The installer should load and run to start your install.
