IPhone – How to make a custom ringtone for the iPhone using iTunes 10 only

I'd like to use a snippet of a song I have purchased as a ringtone for my iPhone. Is this possible using only iTunes?

I have found a few guides on the web, but I can't seem to complete this task following these guides. I might be misunderstanding something, or the guides are out-of-date, or incomplete.

I am looking for a solution that will be useful for an extended period of time, for others who see this question. There are similar older questions, but I'm interested in iTunes version 10 on the Mac.

As far as I'm concerned (this has worked for my iPhone, and is covered in this guide as well), it works like this:

In Import Settings, choose the AAC Encoder.
Go to the library and right-click the song you want to use. Select Info, and then the Options tab.
Here, set a time period using the Start and Stop markers. This period shouldn't exceed 40 seconds.

Now, let's convert it to the appropriate format.

Click OK, and right-click the song again. Select "Create AAC Version".
Locate the newly created AAC file ("Show in Finder" works on a Mac). It should reside in the same folder as the original, or in your iTunes library. Its extension will be .m4a.
Rename the extension from m4a to m4r.

Clean up and re-import:

Remove the AAC file from your iTunes library (do not move it to the Recycling Bin/Trash though)
Re-import the m4r file by dragging it into iTunes
Drag the newly imported file to your iPhone

If you remember the old id and still have access to the email account associated with it, you can definitely reset the password and then authorize your macbook to play these files.

iForgot will prompt you for information, but it should allow a password reset via email, not just questions. If you still cannot remember/access the info, I recommend sending apple an email via their iTunes store support and see if they can identify you via other means.

Yes, for each individual track, you can press CMD+I (get info) and get to this tab:

iTunes Get Info Track

Where you can check Start Time, Stop Time or both and specify a time. Part of a Gapless album is useful too, since it will not leave a gap time between tracks (nice when you have live albums or such).-

This is not natively possible within iTunes and you'll have to perform further research, try to find an App that does it and/or create some sort of Applescript. But doesn't seem like something natural to do, so it may not be easy to achieve (automatically).

A simple trick you could employ is to record a 30 second silence (you can probably find them if you google, it's used for ringtones) and play that in between your playlist.
