In my usual review of email, I have the message preview pane open and use the keyboard to delete, archive, or skip messages with the focus in the message list. Sometimes I want to click a link in in an email. When I'm finished with that, I usually switch back to Mail using ⌘-Tab. In that case it takes a mouse/trackpad gesture to put the focus back in the message list. Normally, I would expect to be able to use ⌥-Tab to shift focus between the panes, but instead, the focus moves to individual items in the toolbar and skips the message list. What am I missing?

Just type some of your characters of word & press F5 & see the magic, It is what you want. Suppose your not getting the word rub some & get what you want.

Suppose, I am a user, I would do as follows.
- Start typing
- suppose I typed Compu
- and then I would press F5 for getting hints
simple & short just F5 does all for you, no need to press Cmd+: and then get correct one from list. It will give you list on the spot.
If the focus is on the search box press "esc" key. If not, the fastest way I've found is by first pressing Option+Command+F to set the focus on the search box and then press esc to clear it.

On macOS Mojave, tab cycles between Mailbox list, message list, message and search bar.
