Key command to shift Apple Mail focus to top

This one drives me crazy…

If you search in Apple Mail, you likely end up way back in time in your list of emails. When I am ready to read new email I have to scroll, scroll, scroll to the top of the list again.

There HAS to be a key command or something I am missing to instantly jump to the top of the list.

Is there?

You should be able to press the Home key (Fn + ← left arrow key on a laptop) to go to the top.

Alternatively, if you have a multi touch trackpad, you can use BetterTouchTool to set a gesture for Home and End. I personally think this is the best way, and I set a three fingered swipe down to Home and a three fingered swipe up to End

It's annoying that there isn't a simple keyboard shortcut for this. I suggest providing Mail feedback to Apple if you'd like to see it work properly.

For a workaround, try the following AppleScript:

tell application "Mail"
    set the selected messages of message viewer 1 to {} -- deselect messages
    tell application "System Events"
        key code 115 -- scroll to top
    end tell
end tell

You can make this into a Service and assign a keyboard shortcut to it from the Keyboard section of System Preferences.

IPad – Scrolling to the bottom of 500 emails

A fast way to get back to the top from anywhere in the list is to tap the status bar above the list. This works in many places throughout iOS, like Safari, Notes, etc.

The only fast way to the bottom, though, is to swipe as fast as you can!
