Ubuntu – Where is the X.org config file? How to configure X there

As Ubuntu 10.10 seems to neither detect my graphics card (Intel 82852/855GM) automatically nor use the corresponding Intel driver even after manually installing it, I am looking into manually configuring X (shouldn't I?). Where can I find the configuration files I need to edit?

The xorg.conf does not exist by default any more. You CAN create one though.

Boot into recovery mode and select Root Shell. Then run:

X -configure

Then:

cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Reboot and you can edit the new Xorg.conf.

In the ServerLayout section in your xorg.conf you should add something like this:

Section "ServerLayout"
    Option "Xinerama" "on"
    Option "Clone" "off"
EndSection

That should be enough to make sure xinerama works properly. If you don't have it already, you should add something like this aswell:

Section "ServerLayout"
    Screen 0 "first-screen"
    Screen 1 "second-screen" RightOf "first-screen"

The monitor reports its dimensions using EDID. Most probably the monitor does not report correctly the EDID information. In addition, newer X.Org is strict about EDID information.

So, how to figure out if this is an EDID issue;

Install the read-edid package with sudo apt-get install read-edid
Get the EDID information with sudo get-edid | parse-edid
Finally, post the information here (use pastebin).
