Default Folder for Themes, Icons, and Wallpapers in Ubuntu

I want to make remastered ubuntu for my task. and now I got problem with theme, icon, and wallpaper. actually I've install numix theme and wallpaper and remaster my Ubuntu with REMASTERSYS and after I test it in VM, the numix theme is there. but when I install numix bluish theme and it's icons, the remastered Ubuntu still display numix theme like a previous one. also, someone told me that the default wallpaper folder is at /usr/share/backgrounds so I put my costumized wallpaper there so I can use it for my remastered Ubuntu but the wallpaper still numix. do I miss something? sorry for bad english

Wallpaper

The default wallpaper directory is found at /usr/share/backgrounds/ and the default wallpaper is called warty-final-ubuntu.png so overwrite it to change the default wallpaper easily.

Icons

For Icons globcally it's the directory /usr/share/icons/ which typically contains pre-installed themes (shared by all users)

Or locally in your home folder : ~/.icons which typically contains folders with the themes installed by the user.

Also, many applications have their icons in /usr/share/pixmaps/

Themes

For Themes globally it's the directory /usr/share/themes/ which typically contains default themes (shared by all users)

Or locally in your home folder : ~/.themes which typically contains themes installed by the user.

I think I'm late but...

I created an xml background (with full paths descriptions), and I've saved it at /usr/share/backgrounds/my-background.xml

then I edited /usr/share/gnome-background-properties/ubuntu-wallpapers.xml adding

<wallpaper deleted="false">
 <name>My background</name>
 <filename>/usr/share/backgrounds/my-background.xml</filename>
 <options>zoom</options>
</wallpaper>

just saves the file and the new slideshow wallpaper is shown in appearences window

Dynamic Unity Greeter – How to Add Customized Wallpapers to Dynamic Unity Greeter

After you added you images to /usr/share/backgrounds you need to open the Change Desktop Background dialog by right clicking in your desktop and selecting it.

After the dialog is open you can click the + to add the backgrounds you just copied to /usr/share/backgrounds

Add all the images you have in /usr/share/backgrounds, after you have done that you can select one and it will become your background.

If you are using 12.04 that same image will become the dynamic background for the Unity Greeter. If it does not follow the Setting the dynamic switching off section of How do I change the wallpaper in LightDM? except instead of actually switching it off you use the command

gsettings reset com.canonical.unity-greeter draw-user-backgrounds

has described in the answer.

Note to summarise:

Step 1: Add you custom wallpaper to `/usr/share/backgrounds
Step 2: Is conditional if you want your custom wallpaper to appear in the dynamic unity greeter (log in) in 12.04. Right click on your custom image and select "Properties" then select the Permissions tab. Navigate to the "Other" permission and change it from None to "Read-only". Note: If you don't do this Unity's default wallpaper will appear in Unity Greeter.
Step 3: Now you need to open the Change Desktop Background dialog by right clicking on your desktop and selecting it.
Step 4: After the dialog is open you can click the + to add the backgrounds you just copied to`/usr/share/backgrounds.
Step 5: Select your image to and change your desktop background`
Step 6: Log out and see the Unity Greeters background is your custom image
