Ubuntu – What DLNA server to choose?

What DLNA server program should I choose and how do I set it up?
It is an absolute requirement that it doesn't take a lot of resources since it will be running on a 500 MHz machine.

There seems to be quite a few server programs and I don't have any experience with these userfriendly auto-detecet protocols/services.

Btw, the server doesn't have a GUI…

MediaTomb?

Quite popular and only a web interface to speak of. It also does on-the-fly transcoding but you may need to disable that or your little 500mhz server might explode.

MediaTomb is unsupported since 2017-04-03.
They direct users to Gerbera, which is built upon MediaTomb.

Ubuntu – DLNA Server/Control Point like Windows Media Player

The control points in Gupnp-tools are very basic, more a testing tool than a every day media player. Try rygel as a DLNA server and eezUPNP as a control point. There is also kinsky by Linn, but I wasn't able to get it to work, keeps crashing. Another alternative may be serviio, but I haven't tried that yet.

Install Chrome Remote Desktop.
Get an auth code by going to https://accounts.google.com/o/oauth2/auth?scope=https://www.googleapis.com/auth/chromoting%20https://www.googleapis.com/auth/googletalk%20https://www.googleapis.com/auth/userinfo.email&redirect_uri=https://talkgadget.google.com/talkgadget/blank&response_type=code&client_id=440925447803-avn2sj1kc099s0r7v62je5s339mu0am1.apps.googleusercontent.com&access_type=offline&approval_prompt=force (note the client ID is from chromium) and once allowed (on the blank page), the authorization will be the code= parameter of the URL.

On the headless machine run:

$ /opt/google/chrome-remote-desktop/start-host --code="MY_AUTH_CODE" \
    --redirect-url=https://talkgadget.google.com/talkgadget/blank \
    --name="MY_REMOTE_NAME"

Pick a PIN and use it to connect later.
