Ubuntu – Urdu language not listed in the ubuntu 16.04 LTS

I am a new user of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. To my surprise it does not have Urdu Language in language support widow. Kindly help.

Language Support includes the languages for which language packs have been created, and language packs are no longer created for languages with a translation coverage below a certain threshold (can't tell exactly what the limit is). Probably that's the explanation why you don't find Urdu.

You may want to install the fonts-nafees package to render Urdu web contents.

sudo apt install fonts-nafees

Possibly you may also want to contact the Urdu translators team and help improve the translation status, so the Urdu language packs can again be included in the distribution. (They were included in Ubuntu 12.04 and 14.04.)

There is a fonts related bug in Ubuntu 16.04.

For instance, in previous Ubuntu versions the package ttf-devanagari-fonts was installed when you installed the Nepali language. However, that package is not available in the Ubuntu archive for 16.04. The replacement package, which ought to provide the necessary fonts for Nepali, is fonts-deva.

So, Bishal, it would be great if you could install fonts-deva from the Ubuntu archive, and confirm that it provides the fonts needed for a correct rendering of Nepali.

When the bug has been fixed, fonts-deva will automatically be installed when the Nepali language is installed.

Ubuntu – How to install ibus-avro in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

Important note:

Avro Phonetic has now been made available to Ubuntu users via an official package.

To install it:

sudo apt install ibus-avro

ibus-avro in the Ubuntu archive installs the latest upstream software, including a bugfix which is important to Ubuntu users. The GitHub repo referred to in step 1 and 2 below is in read-only mode, and not useful any longer.

Previous answer:

Get the latest release of Avro from GitHub (at this time, it is 2.1).
Install the package:
```
sudo dpkg -i avro_*_all.deb
```
If you get any dependency errors, run the following command:
```
sudo apt-get install -f
```
The installation should now be finished.
Go to System Settings -> Language Support from Unity Launcher
- Look at the Keyboard input method system
- Select IBus and close the window.
You may need to restart IBus to make everything work. Try the following command:
```
ibus restart
```
Otherwise a reboot may be required.
Go to System Settings -> Keyboard -> Text Entry.
- Search for Avro Phonetic, and add it as input source.
