Ubuntu – Unable to set Terminator as default Terminal in Ubuntu with Cinnamon Desktop

I installed Ubuntu 20.04 from the official website and installed terminator using APT and It worked! Ctrl+Alt+T started terminator.

Then I installed cinnamon desktop, rebooted and Ctrl+Alt+T came up with the default terminal, not with terminator.

I changed the priority to higher than the default emulator with sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/x-terminal-emulator x-terminal-emulator /usr/bin/terminator 60, this also didn't work.

sudo update-alternatives --config x-terminal-emulator gives this table:

What am I doing wrong? Is cinnamon interfering here?

Please enter the following in a terminal :

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.default-applications.terminal exec /usr/bin/terminator

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.default-applications.terminal exec-arg "-x"

You might have to enter the following line as well

gsettings set org.cinnamon.desktop.default-applications.terminal exec /usr/bin/terminator

Here's how to add an 'Open in Terminator' option:

Install 'Nautilus-Actions Configuration Tool'

sudo apt-get install nautilus-actions
```
In 'Nautilus-Actions Configuration Tool', add a new rule with the following (as a guidance):
- In the Actions tab, tick both boxes and select an appropriate name (e.g. Open in Terminator):
- In the Command tab, set:
  - Path: terminator
  - Parameters: --working-directory=%f
- In the Mimetypes tab, set:
  - Mimetype filter: inode/directory
- Go to File > Save to save the rule and you're all set.
I recommend that you also change the preferences in Nautious-Actions Configuration Tool to get rid of the two level context menu by unticking the following in Edit > Preferences:
- (untick) Create a root 'Nautilus-Actions' menu
- (untick) Add an 'About Nautious-Actions' item in the Nautilus context menus
Log out and Log in again.

Now you're all set and should see a 'Open in Terminator' option if you right-click in Nautilus.

Ubuntu – How to set default layout/profile for Terminator for tabs on start

Your terminator starts with the solarized-dark layout because of your layout config for the first child specifies so.

      profile = solarized-dark

If you want to make solarized-dark your default profile change your profile default config (you can copy/paste or rename your current solarized-dark profile to default)

Ideally we would have the option of referencing a profile config on the default section (instead of having to have a copy) but AFAIK that is not possible.

PS: I don't like the idea of always_split_with_profile = True because it forces to inherit the profile which might not be desired in all situations.
