In a fresh install, I have a terminal like everyone else on the Internet, but it is a weird one for me.
Here's what my terminal looks like:
It is missing 'user@hostname' above
Note that there's no "open in new tab" action on right click and there's no label on the tabs that show up when I "open a terminal". Also, I don't really like what the shortcut ctrl + shift + t does.
Why is this happening? Is this the expected behaviour?
If you want to open gnome-terminal with more than one tab when you open it using Ctrl+Alt+T shortcut, go to System Settings → Keyboard → Shortcuts → Custom Shortcuts and add a new Ctrl+Alt+T shortcut as follow:
Select Reassign when you are asked:
Now, to open a new tab in gnome-terminal, you can use Ctrl+Shift+T. To access/view/edit your terminal shortcuts go to Edit → Keyboard Shortcuts...:
You can switch the tabs using Ctrl+PgDn to next tabs and Ctrl+PgUp for the previous tabs.
Reordering can be done using Ctrl+Shift+PgDn and Ctrl+Shift+PgUp.
Also Alt+1 to Alt + 0 can be used to switch tabs starting from 1 to 10. Where Alt+1 is for 1st tab in terminal, Alt+2 is for 2nd tab ... Alt+0 is for 10th tab.
If more than 10 tabs are opened then you've to switch using the shortcut mentioned above. i,e Ctrl+PgDn and Ctrl+PgUp
To close any selected tabs use Ctrl+Shift+W

This seems to be a newer version of GNOME Terminal update (>3.10). When you open the preferences dialog, you should see something like this:
When you set the "open new terminals" setting to "Tab", the new terminal action will now open a new tab in the same window instead of opening a new window.
The old behaviour regarding tabs seems to have been changed in 3.12 and 3.14, for some reason.
You seem to have updated your GNOME components with a version that does not ship with Utopic, so you should expect to see it break.
