Ubuntu – Starting Dolphin with shortcut Meta+E

I'm used to open a file manager with the shortcut meta+e from Windows.

Now I would like to have the same behavior under Plasma 5.

I've edited the shortcut here:

But when I use the shortcut nothing happens.

I also tried another shortcut: Ctrl+Alt+E but this won't work either.

How to achieve this behaviour?

KDE application launcher shortcuts

The KDE shortcuts can be added from the KDE menu editor - online: https://docs.kde.org/trunk5/en/kde-workspace/kmenuedit/index.html

KMenuEdit allows editing the menu of KDE application launchers.

KMenuEdit can be started either by right mouse button clicking the application launcher button on the panel and choosing Edit Applications..., or by typing kmenuedit in the KRunner line.

To add Dolphin launch shortcut key: KDE Menueditor > System > Dolphin > Advanced tab > Current shortcut key

Meta key can't be used as a shortcut alone, because Qt, and therefore KDE, uses it only as a modifier.

But you can set it to some two-key shortcut that you like. Go to Global Keyboard Shortcuts – KDE Control Module, look for something like KRunner or Command Run Interface in KDE component and change the Alt+F2 keyboard shortcut to something like Meta+Space.

And if you really want to have it mapped to just the Meta key, I found a solution in this article. It suggests to remap the Meta key to some other key like F13.
Just add the line xmodmap -e 'keycode 133 = F13' to your autostart script. Then you should run the same line in a terminal or just relogin for it to take effect.
If you want to do it with different keys, use xev | grep keycode, press the keys and look at the output.

Then change the shortcut as usual, and when you press the Meta key, it will show up as F13. Note that F13 won't work as a modifier key, so you can't make key combinations with it, and also some applications might need to use the Meta key itself, so that won't work too.

You can use xdotool + xbindkeys

insall xdotool and xbindkeys
```
sudo apt-get install xdotool xbindkeys
```
generate the default configuration file for xbindkeys
```
xbindkeys --defaults > ~/.xbindkeysrc
```
open ~/.xbindkeysrc with some text editor
```
kate ~/.xbindkeysrc
```
add these lines in the end of the file
```
"xdotool mousedown 1"
    Super_L
"xdotool mouseup 1"
    Super_L + Release
```
this will make the left 'windows/super/meta' button act like the left mouse button . for me the releasing thing didn't work specifically with the super button , but it worked with other buttons (I actually used KP_Delete which is the del/. button in the numpad, instead of using Super_L ), but I think this may be a hardware related issue.
save the file and close the editor.
start (or restart) xbindkeys
```
sudo killall xbindkeys && xbindkeys
```
