Ubuntu – Services in rc.d, not starting automatically at boot

I have a few services in rc.d that aren't starting at boot time. I've done the update-rc.d, redoing it tells me that start/stop links are already in place, and I can start services manually by using service start.

One of these services (sabnzbdplus) was pulled from apt, the others are downloaded from git. None of them start up automatically.

Nothing seems to be on google other than reinstall the whole system. Any advice?

I corrected this problem by chuser'ing the files/directories that were involved (including settings). I believe this happened because starting and stopping services with sudo gives them root privileges, whereas they're run as the user account at startup.

Open up ~/.config/autostart/stackapplet.desktop, verify that it is the same as this:

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Exec=python /usr/share/stackapplet/stackapplet.py

Terminal=false
Comment=a panel indicator for monitoring StackExchange sites
Name=StackApplet
Categories=Utility;

The problem is likely with the Exec line, if you used to be using an older version that had a different Exec command.

Even if they are the same, try removing that file. Then un-check and re-check the Start Stackapplet during login checkbox.

UPDATE: Looking at your ~/.xsession-errors, StackApplet needs internet access to work. If you aren't connected to the internet right away on login, you'll need to delay StackApplet from starting before you have connected to the internet.
Paste the following in a file called .stackapplet-start.sh in your home folder:

#!/bin/bash
sleep 30 && python /usr/share/stackapplet/stackapplet.py

Make that file executable:

chmod a+x ~/.stackapplet-start.sh

Now open System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications, edit the StackApplet entry and change the Command: to /home/<USERNAME>/.stackapplet-start.sh.

Ubuntu – Lightdm not starting on boot

Run a terminal and enter cat /etc/X11/default-display-manager. Probably says lightdm if you recently uninstalled GDM. /etc/init/lightdm.conf doesn't accept lightdm as a setting - however, /usr/bin/lightdm or /usr/sbin/lightdm work. So open /etc/X11/default-display-manager in your favorite text editor and replace whatever is there with the following line:

/usr/bin/lightdm

/usr/sbin/lightdm

Reboot and lightdm should start and bring you to the logon screen as usual.
