Ubuntu – Saving Keyring Password

I have found the answer to this but I'm posting it here in case others have the same issue and also asking if anyone has any more details 😉

I use Firefox and Thundirbird's "Gnome Keyring Password Integration" Plugin by Guillermo Molina available here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/gnome-keyring-integration/

Everything has been working perfectly except that every time I start Firefox or Thunderbird I have to enter my keyring password, even if it's the same as my login password.

I could find nothing online about automatically loging in to keyrings other than the Default 'login' keyring

I was about to post a question here when I noticed the little Details drop down in the bottom of the password prompt. Looking here I found four options, the first of which was "Automatically unlock keychain at login" or something to this effect.

Setting this solved the problem, even if the keyring's password is not my login password.

Now if anyone can tell me how to change this back again now that it's set and the password prompt doesn't popup any more I'd be very grateful. 🙂

When you're asked to provide a keyring password and you unlock it with the mentioned checkbox checked, passwords manager adds the new record to your default keyring - you can open "Passwords and Keys" application (seahorse), select your default keyring and remove unwanted records.

There is no special trick here; you are just responsible for keeping your desktop session locked when you are not sitting in front of your computer. Otherwise people walking by could do anything to your computer, even if you are not using a keyring of any kind, including installing a secret password-sniffing program!

Get in the habit of locking your screen whenever you get up for any reason. Do it even when you are sure you are alone so it becomes rote. This is quicker if you configure a keyboard shortcut like Ctrl+Alt+L for it (launch Keyboard --> Shortcuts --> System --> Lock screen). It would be nice if the Power control panel allowed you to lock the screen when a laptop lid is closed, but this does not seem to be an option.

And in case you forget, configure the screen to lock after a few minutes of inactivity (rather than going into a screensaver): Screen > Lock.

Here is my analyze to the 4 possibible ways to record Firefox passwords listed in your question,
plus a new solution (#5):

  1. Their are some notes to security in the README. It seems that it is not more or less secure then the original implementation. But for GNOME Keyring you have some options like auto-lock your keyring after a certain (idle) time.

  2. Source can be found on the Add-On-site under "Version Info" -> "View the Source" and yes, it is from a spanish coder as you can see by following the link to the authors website. A drawback for this extension is the missing license which makes it no FOSS.

  3. is the same as 2., Mozilla just localize their websites

  4. Is just a packaged version of 1.

  5. A new competitor seems to be this "GNOME Keyring Integration"-Add-On. It's licensed under the GPLv3 and is very lightweight. Source can also be found on the Add-On-site under "Version Info" -> "View the Source". So you can also take a full review.
