I've got two browsers open, chrome and firefox, and would like to have a shortcut to be able to open a link I have in chrome as a new tab in my firefox window. Right now I do this by clicking 'Copy link address' in Chrome and pasting the URL into firefox, but I would like to have a shortcut defined to do this. Is this doable?

This is a feature of Firefox 4. If you start typing an already opened address, the drop-down menu will suggest switching to the already active tab pointing to that address.
There is an add-on for Firefox that will give you total keyboard control over the browser called "Pentadactyl" (here). While not required, you'll probably enjoy it more if you already know vi keybindings.
So in fact, there is a way to change tabs with a "terminal" (ok, not really a terminal). But Pentadactyl supports the following commands:
:tabnext
:tabprevious
:tablast
and several others.
You can make Chrome open when you click a mailto: link:
Access Gmail, and click an icon of the shape of overlapped double diamonds, next to the star icon in the omni-box where the URL is displayed.
If you don't see it, try reloading the page.

If you somehow missed the opportunity and said 'no' after the diamond question, your chance to undo that is under chrome://settings/handlers, where gmail will be listed as handler-question-blocked.

Have you considered just dragging the link? I use both browsers at the same time (each on it's own screen). I find myself mostly using Chrome for gmail etc.. and will get links via email. I just click and drag from Chrome to the Firefox tab bar and the page will open in a new tab. It works in the other direction too (Firefox to Chrome). One needn't limit this to email... basically any link on any page will work via this method.
