The default behavior of my shell window is to create tabs. I can switch between those tabs but only one tab can be visible at a time.
Is it possible to open multiple shells in the same window? E.g. have a window split 4-ways with each pane running it's own instance of a shell. I would prefer this over tabs since I can run my shell window full-screen at see 4 shells at the same time.
The normal behavior doesn't require extra key presses to be able to to switch between the instances. When you get to an application that has multiple instances just keep a while the Alt key pressed (maximum 2 seconds) and you will see that after you can switch between instances also using the same shortcut: Alt+Tab. Just don't take your finger from the Alt key.
Anyway, if you want more, the behavior about you asked can be obtained using CompizConfig Settings Manager (you said that you have it installed). After you open it, first enable Application Switcher:
Second, go inside to Application Switcher, select General tab and play a little with those options until you get what you wish. Personally, I made the following selections:

I would use a bash script for each workspace and add the commands there.
that's the basic idea, then you can add commands like this, where you start a new terminal and run some commands.
and just update your bash file which should be like this filename.sh and mark it executable so you can launch it by just double clicking it.
This could help you launch your commands in a new workspace.
