Recently I found that on a macbook it is possible to drag the multiple desktops to change their order.
The ideal solution would be to, while on the compiz Expo mode, be able to just drag and move a whole workspace together with all the windows it contains to another position.
Searching for this I found an ubuntu braistorm idea that describes exactly what I would like to be able to do!
A work around using a command line script could also be used maybe..?
Any ideas?
Disabled "Scale" under ccsm's "Window Management" .... and snapping to maximize suddenly stopped, finally! A lot of other things changed too, namely many updates since last month.
It would go such a long way if this plugin like so much else had a nearby description of what it actually does and when...not just "Scale Windows" on ccsm's left column and nothing else mentioned.
You can create a standalone compiz session with gnome3-gnome-panel+metacity, unity 2d launcher, awn wing-panel(with all applets), docky, synypse, cairo-dock,slingshot or combination of these.Have a look on following screenshots:

In above screenshots you can replace unity-launcher with docky or awn or cairo-dock.

Notes: There are many bugs in 11.10, which makes using custom session a painful experience(such as this bug: #bug 826771).I will update the post with important GDM & compiz fix.
Updates: Bug 826771 has been fixed in nautilus - 1:3.2.1-0ubuntu4.2 (ubuntu 12.04) for gnome-session.But there are other bugs (specially gdm bugs) still present in Ubuntu 12.04.

I have been looking for an answer to this question for quite a long time but recently I had stumbled upon the answer myself.
Solution:
When you hit
Windows+Sto go to workspace switcher, in that view you can quickly double click on any visible window in any workspace and drag that window to any other workspace.This way you can re-order workspaces.
I am a huge user of workspaces on a daily basis and I find this little trick very helpful to re-order my workspaces.
