Ubuntu – I Can’t swap the windows on Window List at gnome panel after upgrading

I had been entered into Classic Mode. Sorry for my insufficient information.

At 10.10, the 'boxes' can be swapped and in appearance in black background and movable position, but now lost.

When I was using Maverick 10.10, I could swap the windows, the boxes with windows' title, on the Window List at gnome panel.

However, after updating to Natty 11.04, this function is lost.

Now, the boxes sort according to the opening time ,but ,strangely, the sort rearranged after changes of the window's title. The rearrangement is not happen every time.

When I drag the boxes, pointer cursor with an icon appear but it is useless when I dropping it into anywhere , such as folders, panels, other boxes, and even trash. Neither programs nor nautilus will be triggered after the drop.

The preferences of mine is 'Never group windows'.

You can subscribe to the bug and marks it as "Affects Me" to follow along progress of the issue. Here's a work around:

A temporary fix that works for me is to right-click the panel and click Properties, then select and deselect "Show hide buttons". " Thank you for your response.

Using the answer to the question @Uri Herrera linked in his comment, I couldn't fix the issue.

However, one of the answers did point to a bug that tracks this issue, and I found a comment on the bug that solved it for me.

Here are the key bits:

First, create a bash script (I named it /etc/xdg/autostart/gnomesettingsdaemonfix.sh)

pid=$(pgrep gnome-settings-)

while [ -n "$pid" ];
do
  pid=$(pgrep gnome-settings-)
  sleep 0
done

exit 0

Make sure it is executable (run chmod +x).

Then edit /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-settings-daemon.desktop

Change the Exec line to:

Exec=bash -c 'bash /etc/xdg/autostart/gnomesettingsdaemonfix.sh; /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon

That seems to have fixed it so far for me.

I had this too on a machine that was all the way upgraded from Intrepid and the problem did not appear for a dummy new user I created for investigation purposes. This is how I solved it:

I logged out of unity, switched to a virtual terminal hitting AltF1, logged in as root, killed all remaining processes from my usual login with killall -u <login>, did a cd /home/<login> and a mv .gconf .gconf-old. When logging back in, the issue had disappeared with a lot of others for the price of losing some configurations which I considered a bargain.

After some diffing .gconf with .gconf-old with meld, I reached at the conclusion that some pre-natty compiz settings were the most probable cause, but your mileage may vary.
