Ubuntu – How to manually install GRUB?

I was installing Ubuntu 11.10 and the bootloader install failed. I tried installing it again but it didn't work so I want to know how to install grub manually.

I think this technique will not work. Because you don't know in which position you installer crashed. Check your disk first.

If you want to install grub manually then: Login using livecd. Open terminal, login as root:

sudo -i

find out your linux disk :

fdisk -l

mount it:

mount /dev/sdaX /mnt

Recover:

grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda

In my opinion, you try to install by selecting 'continue without a bootloader', when you finish, reboot your computer with a liveCD or LiveUSB again. after being on the desktop, try to reinstall grub with the steps:

mount ubuntu partition that you installed earlier. you can click on places > your-ubuntu-partition

open terminal, run:

sudo chroot /media/your-ubuntu-partition

sudo grub-install /dev/sda

sudo update-grub

close the terminal, and try to reboot it.

Boot from CD.
Run fdisk -l and see which is your linux partition, say /dev/sda2.
Mount the partition to say /mnt using mount /dev/sda2 /mnt
Now run the following magic command from anywhere:
```
grub-install --root-partition=/mnt /dev/sda
```
You will get the message

no error reported
Reboot.
