Ubuntu – How to install grub on the PBR instead of MBR

I own a Mac and I want to install a triple boot. The problem is that I need to keep my windows bootloader to make sure that it works well with Mac OS. But I want Ubuntu too and if I install ubuntu, it will install Grub on the MBR. In previous versions of Ubuntu, it was possible to choose where installing Grub but I can't find it in Ubuntu 11.10. Is there someone who knows how to do it ?

Ok it seems that it is not a problem of MBR in my case. On a Mac there are GPT and MBR. You must use the Disk utility of Mac OSX to make all partitions because this is the only tool which is able to synchronise GPT and MBR (they are note made to work together, it is usually one of them). I think it was my problem because I succeed, even in putting grub on the MBR. Thanks for your help mikewhatever !

I would have simply not used grub for your windows/linux partition and gone with rEFit:

http://refit.sourceforge.net/

This would mean your windows partition would show up in a menu when first booting right next to mac osx and ubuntu.

To recover your current partition you should point the grub repair at the MBR (not GPT) and use the /boot/grub location. I don't know if you've installed the boot to sda or sda1 as the disk boot record seems more sensible in this case.

sudo grub-install --root-directory /media/ubuntu /dev/sda1

Mount your / partition in /mnt and your /boot partition in /mnt/boot, then chroot into the system and run dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc and choose the install location from the menu.

sudo -s
mount /dev/sda2 /mnt
mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/boot
for f in dev sys proc dev/pts ; do mount --bind /$f /mnt/$f ; done
chroot /mnt
dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc
