In Thunar I could easily switch between Vista-style graphical location bar and editable textual location bar (which doesn't look so eye-candy but is far more convenient for me). Can I configure this in Nautilus?

To permanently switch from path bar to location bar, you can use dconf-tools .
To install dconf-tools, run the following command in a terminal:
sudo apt-get install dconf-tools
After installing it, search for dconf-tools in the dash and open it.
From there, the setting is located at org -> gnome -> nautilus -> preferences.
You need to enable always-use-location-entry to always use the location toolbar instead of the path bar.
I cannot find an easy way of getting nautilus to tell you this. However, there are other ways of finding out.
In Ubuntu 12.10, the "actual path" is under /run/user/USERNAME/gvfs. In 12.04, I think it was under /home/USERNAME/.gvfs (invisible unless you check View->Show Hidden Files in nautilus). The folder names inside these directories look something like smb-share:server=servername.local,share=volume_1.

To make it permanent you have to make changes in gconf-editor.Press Alt+F2 and type gconf-editor.
Navigate to apps → nautilus → preferences and put a check mark in "always_use_location_entry".
