at some point in time I discovered the "window rules" plugin within the compiz config manager. One can use that to automatically show some special application on every workspace for example (so instead of each time "click window title, select 'always on visible workspace' … you could write down a rule to do it for you).
Now; with a fresh installation of 12.10 … there are no more "window rules" within the compiz config manager.
Anyone aware of other ways to achieve similar behavior?
Edit (2019): Nitrogen is no longer maintained. Nitrogen doesn't fully work on newer Ubuntu distros.
nitrogenTo install it, run the following command in terminal:
sudo apt-get install nitrogen
Because nitrogen doesn't have a desktop file by default when is installed, you need to run the following command from terminal to start it:
nitrogen
In it's Preferences, add your wallpaper folder, then at the bottom [...] select Screen 1, 2, etc., to set a different wallpaper for each monitor:
To be able to set a different wallpaper for each monitor, you must disable the file manager from handling the desktop. This means you'll no longer have folders on the desktop.
In GNOME / Unity, install GNOME Tweak Tool:
sudo apt-get install gnome-tweak-toolThen open GNOME Tweak Tool and on the Desktop section, set Icons on Desktop (previously Have file manager handle the desktop) to OFF.
And finally, to have the wallpapers restored each time you log in, add the following command:
nitrogen --restoreto your Startup Applications.

I had the exact same issue. The following worked for me.
Open up CompizConfig Settings Manager (ccsm). Go to the 'Workarounds' section -> Window stickyness (bottom of General Tab). Select/enable the checkbox next to 'Make "on all desktops" windows "sticky"'.

sudo apt-get install compiz-pluginsThis will put back the plugins your used to. There compiz plugins that are not officially supported.
