I love using feh to organise my image collections. I've set the actions to move the current image to a certain directory, but when trying to open gifs, feh doesn't animate them.

Therefore I was searching a lightweight image/gif viewer with the possibility to execute commands with simple key strokes like --action in feh.

I've found a program that might be good enough. It's called gifview and it's an old version of gifsicle; you can get it by installing gifsicle. The really interesting option is -w where you specify the window to open the gifs (so you can make all go to the same acting pretty much like feh), it still doesn't accept command inputs but it's close enough.

Try sxiv with the -animate flag.

The simplest way to do it is play your gif animation in mplayer

Open your gif file in mplayer using following command

  mplayer -loop 0  -speed 0.2 your_gif

Here

-loop 0 means it will run your gif image untill you are not closing it and
-speed 0.2 means it will decrease the animation speed to 20%.

You can pause your animation by pressing the Space button .
mplayer will also show the frame information of your running gif in terminal.

The easiest way would be to do it with this online tool. Simply upload the GIF and mark "run to the end and reverse back to the start" checkbox.

I haven't seen any Linux tool with such feature built in, but if you don't want to use online tools or the file is too large, you could split the GIF using gifsicle, copy and rename the frames or just make a list of filenames in ascending and descending order and join them back together, again - using gifsicle.

Something like this could do the trick:

gifsicle --unoptimize --explode original.gif && 
find . -iname "*\.gif\.*" | sort > frame_list.txt && 
find . -iname "*\.gif\.*" | sort -r >> frame_list.txt && 
cat frame_list.txt | xargs gifsicle > reversed.gif

(In case you get broken/flickering gif or some gifsicle error, you may need to remove optimizations with imagemagick before splitting it: convert original.gif -coalesce unoptimized.gif)
