I downloaded Avast using terminal command wget http://files.avast.com/files/linux/avast4workstation_1.3.0-2_i386.deb and the download and installation was successful.
Then I chose check updates(database) from the interface. As soon as the updates were downloaded the following problem started.
An error occurred in avast! engine: Invalid argument
What should I do to correct the problem?
Step 1. click here to Download avast
step 2 : enter the following command /Downloads
cd ./Downloads
sudo dpkg -i avast-linux-home-edition-1.3.0.deb
step 3 : To start using avast antivirus software, You need to Register with avast here to get a free license key (Don’t worry it’s free!). The license key will be delivered to your email address within 24 hours (usually within a couple of hours).
step 4 : Start the program and enter the license key.
step 5 : To achieve database updating (in my Ubuntu 12.04), the treatment according to Error message in Avast! with the value
256000000according to the comment by 'pbhj' is necessary. That’s all!
/sys is the mount point of a sysfs virtual file system:
sysfs is a virtual file system provided by the Linux kernel. By using virtual files, sysfs exports information about various kernel subsystems, hardware devices and associated device drivers from the kernel's device model to user space. In addition to providing information about various devices and kernel subsystems, exported virtual files are also used for their configuring.
The files in /sys are not real files, viruses will not infect them. Also, you can't create new files inside /sys, try it yourself! There's no need to scan it. Use the command line option --exclude-dir="^/sys" to ignore /sys.

This is a known problem in Avast. You need to increase the maximum amount of shared memory allowed.
