14.04resize
In my freshly installed Ubuntu 14.04 (with Unity) I cannot resize any window. Minimizing and maximizing works fine, but non-full screen applications are stuck to a default size. Moving the cursor to the window edges turns it into resizing arrows, but clicking and dragging yields no result. I am on a
Thinkpad X1, dualboot with Windows 7. Intel HD 4000 graphics card. There is no file /etc/X11/xorg/conf.
Any suggestions?
It sounds to me like you're using Gnome-classic with Compiz, and in that case resizing windows doesn't work because the plugin is disabled by default (not sure why).
To enable it, install CCSM:
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
Then run CCSM:
alt+f2ccsm+enter
Then in CCSM enable the resize plugin:
If resize doesn't work immediately, you may need to restart Compiz:
compiz --replace & disown
I had the the same issue. I re-installed from scratch after backing up my home directory. After the fresh install of 14.04.1 I still got a black screen when booting. I then selected the advanced options in the grub boot loader, selected start networking, then went to a root shell and ran 'apt-get update' and 'apt-get upgrade' and the next reboot worked fine. Just thought I would share in case these easy steps help anyone else.

Going into CompizConfig Settings Manager, Window Management and ticking the box next to Resize Window solved my problem. It is confusing, that resizing windows is not enabled by default.
