Can I get "dconf-editor" to show as much information as "gconf-editor" did in 11.04?

I find using the gconf version much easier and has better application integration.

I have both installed. Are there additional packages to make this improvement?

No. There is a transition going on here since gconf-editor (xml backend) is going to be phased out in favor of dconf-editor (gnome 3 binary blob). So, you can expect more and more settings in gconf to become invalid or removed and new settings to appear in dconf.

.local, .cache, and .config are part of the FreeDesktop Base Directory Specification. They should not actually be hard-coded but instead use the environment variables (i.e. $XDG_DATA_HOME, $XDG_CACHE_HOME, and $XDG_CONFIG_HOME). There are GLib and Python wrappers for the spec that may be helpful as well. Here's an example in Python:

.gnome and .gnome2 are indeed deprecated and should not be used. These were used by libgnome's gnome-config module.

.gconf does indeed contain the settings that gconf-editor accesses as xml files. For instance, compare the output of the following commands:

gconftool -a /desktop/gnome/applications/browser

cat ~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/applications/browser/%gconf.xml

gnome-system-tools now uses dconf instead of gconf so you have to use dconf-editor (not installed by default, install package dconf-tools) instead of gconf-editor.
