Linux – Is it possible to close the ssh session without closing byobu or the window

If I use byobu, exit only closes the current shell. And I have to close all the shells to terminate the session, which is terrible, because I want to keep all the shells, which is why I use byobu.

Another way is to directly close the window. But sometimes I just want to resume to my local computer.

Is it possible to close the session without disturbing byobu? Or should I always open a new tab/window for an SSH session with byobu?

Yes, of course.

You want to "detach" from your session.

You can use Byobu's hotkey, F6, or you can use the tmux escape sequence, Ctrl-a-d.

When you use screen you need to detach with CTRL+A+D before you exit ssh.

Alternatively, if you want to run a process directly with screen you can use

screen -dmSL [session name] [commands]

-d starts a screen session and immediately detaches from it
-m forces creating a new screen session
-S lets you give the session a name
-L turns on logging to ~/screenlog.0

example:

screen -dmSL workstuff myscript.sh

You can then either:

resume later using screen -x workstuff

check the log file less -r ~/screenlog.0

You can try sending a break signal by pressing CTRL+Break.

If the connection is an SSH-2 connection and the server supports it, you will have a "Break" option under "Special Commands"
