When running Internet Explorer from the the modern UI, I can't find out how to access tabs. I can create tabs using Ctrl + T, but I'm not sure how to switch between tabs, see what tabs I have open, etc.
How do I navigate between tabs when using the modern UI Internet Explorer?
Official answer (as per MS docs) to the general query "Can you access the Metro version of a non-default browser in Windows 8?"
Short answer: As per Microsoft's guidelines, only the default browser can access/participate in the "Metro style experience". So this behaviour is clearly intentional and unless Microsoft changes its guidelines or a browser-maker flouts them or some sort of hack is created, we're stuck with it.

Activation (launch). The following rules govern app activation:
Desktop shortcuts, pinned taskbar icons, and other "desktop artifacts" activate the new experience enabled desktop browser in the desktop.
Tiles in the Start screen activate the browser in the new user experience when the browser is the default. When the browser is not the default, tiles activate the browser in the desktop. This same behavior also applies to a browser's secondary tiles.
It is strongly recommended that browsers implement "contextual launching". Update (Possible workaround): Ok, someone needs to confirm that this works on their systems as well:
Suppose Firefox Nightly is set as the default browser. Go to Control Panel / Programs / Default Programs / Set Default Programs / (Firefox) Nightly / Choose defaults for this program:
Now uncheck Protocols like FTP, HTTP and HTTPS:
Now when you run IE (even though it's not the default), does the Metro version run?
If I start a Modern-UI app and then switch to a different app or a normal program running on the desktop, what happens to the first app?
The app enters a suspended state — you can check its resources in task manager.
Apps will be suspended when you are not using them, this is for performance. When suspended you won't feel your system 'lag' (ie slowdowns attributed to running an intensive application in the background).
Windows 8 is designed to keep in mind that when any background app is not active, it should not use much CPU, so your system performs well in the active app.
Any Metro style app is in one of 4 lifecycle states at any given time:
As the app transitions between states, it receives lifecycle events that help provide a consistent and high performance experience to the user.

You can use CTRL + Tab to navigate through tabs in a forward direction or use CTRL + Shift + Tab to navigate in a backwards direction.
There is also a top bar to allow you to add new tabs. You should be able to get the top bar by right clicking over it, or the equivalent touch gestures
