Excel – Microsoft Excel 2007 – Cannot Fit All Text Into Cell

Is it possible to fit a large amount of text within a cell in Excel 2007?

I have 1,890 words – consisting of 10,110 characters (without spaces) – that I need to put into a single cell in Excel. I have set the cell to the maximum size (column width of 255 and row height of 409.5), yet it fails to contain all of the text. I have also set the text to the minimum size – size 1 (even though it is unreadable) – just to see if this helps, but it does not unfortunately.

I am required to keep all of the text in a single cell, so cannot branch into surrounding cells.

Is there a way around this that I am missing or overlooking?

There are two points here; containing and displaying.

Per Microsoft 32,767 characters is the max a cell can contain. So yes you can fit 10,110 characters in the cell.

As allready discussed in other answers, no you can not display that many characters in a fashion that will be readable.

A combination of 2 settings provides you this functionality:

Select the cells where data entry will be performed, go in Format Cells, Protection and uncheck LOCKED.
On the Ribbon, under Review, PROTECT your worksheet. Notice that some exceptions are available: Select, Format cells, Insert, Delete, etc. Just leave them all unchecked, except Select. If your users need to insert rows, also include the exceptions to "Insert rows" (and perhaps "Delete rows").

This will do the trick. it is set up to work with your example ranges

=INDIRECT(CONCATENATE("R",MATCH(MAX(S4:S5),S4:S5,0)+3))

the +3 at the end off sets the value returned by the MATCH function to get to the desired rows. MATCH() will return the location of a value (in this case the MAX of S4 and S5) in an array of values (in this case the values listed in S4 and S5). so if S4 is the larger then MATCH would return a 1 (the first value) and if S5 were larger then MATCH would return 2 (the second value in the array). therefore to reach rows 4 or 5 just add 3, which i did.
