Excel – Adding text axis labels to excel scatter chart

I have a Spreadsheet with data like this

Label Data
PA_1  1
PA_2  2
PB_1  3

with hundreds of rows.

I want to create a scatter graph where the x-axis contains the names in the label column.
Instead, the graph x-axis has numbers instead of the text I want.

This question is similar to Excel scatter chart, with grouped text values on the X axis, but the answer that is given would not make sense given the number of data points I have.

To be clear I want to label the axis, not the individual data points.
Is there a way to do this that I am not noticing?

That is odd....

However, you can mimic the scatter plot by choosing a line chart and then just format the data series line color to be "no line". You should then get your labels on the horizontal axis.

Clear the top left cell. The blank cell tells Excel that the first row (series names) and first column (category labels) are special.

Excel scatter plots cannot take names instead of values on their x-axis. They assume a number series for the x-axis. If you want to replicate the effect of a scatter plot but use named x-axis values, you can use a line chart instead.

First, though, you are going to need to re-order your data. Each data point for a city must be in a separate column on the same row. For your example data set:

   A         B   C   D   E    
1  London    23  22  44  18
2  Paris     34  14
3  New York  45

Select the data and choose a line chart style with data points marked. Double-click a line to go into the Format Data Series dialog. Under Line Color choose No Line, and click OK. You can repeat the process quickly with the rest of the data set by clicking on a line and pressing CTRL+Y.
