Emacs – Fullscreen on Mountain Lion Without Toolbar

The newest version (24.3) of Emacs.app includes support for Mountain Lion's fullscreen. However, even after disabling the toolbar (tool-bar-mode 0), the space for the toolbar is not used by Emacs, it just remains blank until the menu is shown. How do I get this space back for a more full fullscreen experience?

The correct answer is a newer version of Emacs.app is required. 24.3, while the latest, is not the latest and greatest. 24.3.50 is available via a nightly build. It solves the problem.

Both native (>= OSX 10.7) and "old style" fullscreen are supported. Customize `ns-use-native-fullscreen' to change style. For >= 10.7 native is the default.

To formally answer this question: It could be that .MacOSX/environment.plist does not work anymore (?) or at least not reliably. It never worked for apps launched by Spotlight. It is documented though: Runtime Configuration Guidelines: Environment Variables

The alternative to that is using launchctl, which will make environment variables accessible to GUI apps. For example, this copies your shell's PATH to the environment:

launchctl setenv PATH $PATH

For any changes to $PATH, you will have to restart the affected apps. You do not need to reboot if you use above syntax. If, however, you change /etc/launchd.conf, you will need to reboot. See also: Setting environment variables in OS X? - Stack Overflow
