The brand new released Google drive allows to sync a folder which resides under My Documents (on Windows systems). However, I would like to sync a folder that resides on a network-mapped drive. Would it be possible please and if yes then how?

A little difficult troubleshoot at this point but did you try this:
- Click the Google Drive icon and select "View unsyncable files"
- Click Retry all.

Well, looks like unlike what all news site claimed, it does not change the old behavior, but adds something else.
The new feature is a semi sync as the new multiple folders do not use My Drive:
This means they won't sync to your other computers, only to Google Drive's webpage.
In other words, if you have multiple computers, then the only folder to sync between all of them is the good old Google Drive folder.
The only exceptions are files and folders on which you right clicked and chose to add to My Drive. Yes, just like files and folders that other users shared with you.

You can choose any folder during the Google Drive install.
Firstly select "Advanced Setup" on the second page of the Getting Started screen.
Then click the "Change" button next to Folder Location
Select any folder you want, including network shares and mapped network drives.
Voila! You have Google Drive on any folder you want.
