I have an application that uses Oracle 11gr2. For the Oracle client installation, I first install InstantClient and then run the setup again, choose Custom, and choose "Oracle Database Utilities" since the InstantClient doesn't have exp/imp with it.
My question is, instead of doing 2 steps for installation, how can I just do it once? What corresponding options do I have to select in Custom mode to install InstantClient? I have attached a pic for the complete list of items available.

Just guesswork, but do you select "Upgrade an existing database" early on:
and "advanced install" later on:
The docs do look as if they are referring to the 10g installer.
Maybe an error appears in the target database's alert log? Run this:
SQL> show parameter background_dump_dest
...and go to the directory given to check the alert_<SID>.log. Or do a trace of the imp session in the target database instance. (Usually the errors appear in the exp / imp output themselves (saved to a log with LOG=log_file.log ) but I assume the export ran file with no warnings and completes with):
"Export terminated successfully without warnings."
When you are copying the file, are you sure it's not getting corrupted somehow? (md5sum remains the same)
Did you try importing into an empty schema so you don't have to set IGNORE=Y?
And when you wrote:

Did you mean no matter which one or two tables you choose, it still crashes? Try simulating an import with SHOW=Y?

I'd say that Oracle Call Interface and Oracle Java Client, plus may be SQL*Plus if you want to be able to run scripts, should be sufficient.
