My terminal on osx 10.11.6 will not accept `[` character

Every time I type it the terminal flashes but doesn't insert it. If I paste in a command that has a [ it will paste everything except the ['s

This has been happening before I updated to 10.11, but has become a massive issue, I can't use jq at all because of it.

I also have the same issue with iTerm2.

So I have found the cause in my .inputrc

[[ $- = *i* ]] && bind TAB:menu-complete

I don't know why it's the cause of the problem but it was resolved by removing this, and to be honest I am not even sure what the reason for this being there was

if anyone knows the reason this causes it please feel free to answer and I will accept that answer over this

Where did you install git to? Different install methods will put it in different places. Double check your install process. On my machine i have it in /usr/bin/

You need to ensure your PATH contains the directory that the git lives in.

You can either run locate git to search for it, you'll probably have to build your locate database if you haven't already.

Of you can just try a few typical places

/usr/bin/git --version

Once you know where it is installed, can modify your PATH file by editing .profile or .bash_profile to add the appropriate value.

Percent character breaks Terminal

Looking at your .bash_profile, this seems to be the most suspicious line:

trap 'printf "${OPENTITLEBAR} `history 1 | cut -b8-` - `pwd` ${CLOSETITLEBAR}"' DEBUG

It is doing a printf on the history (which will contain your % character).

I have no idea what that is intended to do (update window title with last command?), but I would guess if you comment it out, the error will stop.
