I was hoping there was a way I would be able to make all folders and files hidden on the OS X Desktop, but leave the Hard drive(s), network drives, CD's/DVD's, etc. But if I was to go into the Desktop Folder using Finder, the items would still be there. So, basically the opposite of the Finder Preferences of showing specific items on the desktop, to hide the files, etc. but leave the HDD's, CD's, etc.:

In the terminal, do this:
defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop -bool false && killall Finder
After this, there'll be nothing on your Desktop (but still in ~/Desktop, i.e. your Desktop Folder). It'll look like this:
Beautiful, isn't it? If you want to change it back:
defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop -bool true && killall Finder
You can use ⇧⌘. (shift-command-.) to show hidden files in a file dialog temporarily.
To make Sublime Text show hidden files by default, run:
defaults write com.sublimetext.2 AppleShowAllFiles -bool true
To show hidden files in all applications but not in Finder, run:
defaults write -g AppleShowAllFiles -bool true
defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool false
You can apply the changes by quitting and reopening applications. AppleShowAllFiles also affects other views besides file dialogs.

What I do is just have a folder on the desktop which I occasionally throw things into when the desktop gets too cluttered - at least you only have one thing visible on the desktop. You could also try https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/48203/desktop-pirate
