In OSX 10.9.1, I have a folder on the desktop which is empty in the Finder view, but the icon info says '8 items' – see screen grab:
I have checked for invisible files via search>show invisible and with an FTP app which lists files including those beginning with a dot (which are usually hidden), but cannot see 8 files.
Is this a known bug with desktop icons? Is there a solution? It's infuriating when deleting folders and wanting to make absolutely sure not to lose files.
The ls manual page explains this:
total 16
Total, here, does not represent the number of items, but the sum of the number of BLOCKS allocated to the files in the directory.
For example, if the block size is 512 bytes (don't quote me on this, but the math checks out), and the total disk space used by the directory is 8KB on disk:
8 KB = 8000 bytes
8000 B/512 B = 15.625
Rounding this value up equates to 16 blocks.
My empty Downloads directory reads the same:
njboot$ ls -axhl ~/downloads

I will admit, I hadn't noticed that the defaults write command stopped working in Mavericks.
However, when I DO clean network mounts, instead of your one liner find and rm, I use this:
dot_clean .
The manfile explains:
dot_clean -- Merge ._* files with corresponding native files.
I don't use the -m flag, but you may find it helpful in your situation.
-m Always delete dot underbar files.
Here is another person actively trying to stop .DS_Store files from being created: http://www.aorensoftware.com/blog/2011/12/24/death-to-ds_store/ - looks like he doesn't want them on drives as much as he doesn't want them on the network!

You must have a Folder Action script that does that, but it is not working correctly.
Right Click on the Folder "Ref"
Scroll down in pop up to Services,
new pop shows up
Click on the Folder Action setup
again a new window will pop up showing the scripts
This is what they look on 10.9.2 without any modifications by me
If you have any other script, just simply uncheck it or use Edit if you know what you doing.
