MacOS – “Import Files into iTunes” automator action not working

I'm having an issue with a simple automator action, "Import Files into iTunes". It's the only thing I have in the workflow but when I drop audio files onto the application, the action encounters an error. In trying to figure out what was amiss, I read that there was a version number conflict after iTunes 10, so I followed the instructions here but they did not fix the issue. Does anyone have a suggestion on what to try or how to diagnose the issue? I'm running Yosemite (10.10.2) and iTunes 12.1.0.50. Thanks for the help!

Did you know about the "~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Automatically Add to iTunes" folder? Anything you copy to this folder will automatically be added to iTunes. Have you tried adding content this way?

While Automator is pretty useful, I personally find the Terminal / command line a nice place to solve problems like this.

The basic idea is still using the steps you describe, but doing all the work from the command line. I researched a useful PDF-to-Text converter, and I found PDFminer quite useful. If you can get it to run, half of your work is done!

pip install pdfminer

Step one and two, then can be solved with this one-liner in Terminal:

pdf2txt.py example.pdf | say -v Daniel -o example.aiff

Still missing is the addition of metadata — what do you need here: Title / Album / "Artist"?

In a final step, you would add the file to a certain iTunes playlist. Depending on your ideal workflow, one then could build a little LaunchAgent that monitors a folder for new files...

You can do it better by placing files to the folder ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Automatically Add to iTunes in Finder (or ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Automatically Add to iTunes.localized in Terminal.app) to be automatically added to iTunes without any third party program
