I have typed a 2 page document using Apple's TextEdit on a Mid 2007 iMac running OS X Yosemite 10.10.5. After closing in RTF format and later reopening, I saw many characters (backslashes, etc.) that I didn't type in.
How do I correct that easily (Help section didn't help)?
Hold down the Command or Ctrl key and click on the icon or file name in the center of the title bar of text edit's document window.
Be sure to click on the title itself. The containing directory structure will be shown in reverse-hierarchical order.
If you hold down the option key, you get “Check Exact Duplicate Items.”
The songs above would not have matched had you used that option. You’ll still need to do some manual parsing, but you probably want to do that anyway.

It sounds like you perhaps opened the doc as plain text instead of rtf. I think you can set it to open as rtf in the Text Edit Preferences.
