I am trying to install OSX (10.6) from disk, but before I do I want to format the hard drive which requires the Disk Utility from the disk.
I am pressing Command + R at start up, but the MacBook is still booting up normally. I've tried before the chime, after the chime, during the chime. Nothing.
I am using the 13" MacBook Pro Mac OS X Install DVD that came with the laptop.
Any ideas what's going on?
There should be a point—after you choose the language, but before it starts trying to install the OS—where you see a Utilities option in the menu bar.
Do you get to this point? If so, what happens when you choose Disk Utility?

OK, now it's a different question, so here's my different answer:
If repairing your main partition is what you want to accomplish, why not just run Disk Utility off the 10.5 system disk?
This has happened to me in the past. The solution that worked for me was making sure that the disc surface is clean and scratch free, and I mean very clean. Using normal CD wipes is good to get dirt off, but if it is scratched more than slightly, then you may have problems.
Or the disc may be defective from the factory, it does happen and they do exist.
Try talking to your local Apple Store about a possible replacement, or if worst comes to the worst, you can order one here (Apple still stocks them).

Command+R is used to enter Recovery Partition which comes with Lion and Mountain Lion.
To start up from the installation DVD (or any bootable CD or USB, for that matter) you must reboot holding down C before the chime and hold until the Apple logo appears.
You could, too, just let it boot normally, and then run the installer (once the DVD is mounted in Finder), which will, then, start up into the DVD.
