Having just unwrapped my new Mac and set up Apple ID, I tried to download the updates waiting for me. I get a message saying "This Apple ID has not been used yet in the App Store. Please review your account information". When I try to do this, it will not allow me to proceed without credit card details, just to download free updates (!). OK, fine i will probably buy the odd App or two, but it will not accept my card details because I have a UK bank card with a Spanish billing address. I am from the UK but have lived in Spain for some years and never had problems using this card. I am stuck in this endless loop I cannot escape from and unable to update my new computer. i am beginning to wish i had bought that PC after all – can anybody help me?!

LMAO, I finally figured out the problem! I had completely reinstalled Snow Leopard from scratch and used SuperDuper to make a backup clone of my hard drive beforehand (which I had always been doing for backup). Then before putting anything else on, I had visited the Mac App Store to reinstall some software when I noticed it said I had all my apps already installed. It didn't take long to figure out that the Mac App Store reads any cloned hard drives you have attached and interprets them as installed apps as well. This would certainly explain why it thought I still had the older versions still installed. Huge bug.
It's a three step process - with pictures below!
- Click support in the Quick Links tab on the right hand side of the App Store app.
- Click billing in the web page that opened as a result of step 1.
- Feed in all the information and wait the 24 hours or so it takes to get an initial response.
It is so worth it to ask for a refund or help (especially in your case where you didn't intend to buy yet) - everyone wins in the end as developers and Apple really don't want a sale that ends up with an unsatisfied customer.
The system is not perfect nor is it set up to allow previews of purchases, so no one should feel bad requesting a refund or two. Especially so if the program wasn't explained well or is seriously faulty. Would you want a $ and change if it made someone have a lasting bad impression of the work for which you get paid?
Do feel bad if you find yourself abusing the system or on your 10th refund request with no good reason and just not getting the picture.

I've had to do a similar thing in the past when setting up my folk's new Mac last year, British accounts, English speakers, Spanish address.
They are incredibly helpful & patient. You really won't regret having bought a Mac.
