I have lots of high-resolution images inserted into the Keynote which makes the file very large. Image masking in Keynote is very convenient for me. But I only want a small corner of the images shown in the slides, and I don't need the cropped part anymore. Reducing file size under the File menu loses image quality and the cropped images are still there. Is there any way to delete the cropped part to reduce file size without losing image resolution/quality?

I ran into this same problem and spent two days searching for it.
My eventual answer: Install VirtualBox. In a virtual machine install windows XP, then install office and power point. This also gave me Access, an applicationf or which there is no good mac equivalent.
I found two workarounds for this, but both are a pain.
- The first is to replace the scaled up image after the scale action completes. This works pretty well, but during the scale process you can see the loss of quality until the regular image replaces it.
- The second is more complicated, but produces better results:
- Start with small scaled version of the image (image A) where you want it. Apply any Build In animations on it.
- Have a full size image (image B) with the opacity set to 0%.
- Have a Scale Action on the image B setting it to the size of Image A.
- Add a Opacity Action on image B to 100%.
- Use a Disappear Build Out on image A.
- Then use the Scale Up Action on Image B to the new size you want it to be.
This produces perfect results, but as you can see is very complicated. I created a little video to show the steps and the results.

I find that exporting as jpeg keeps sufficient quality and reduces the size markedly.
I usually crop using the screen editor / grab (cmnd shift 4) then open in preview and export as jpeg.
