When I try to type a minus character (e.g. open -a TextEdit) in the MC subshell, instead of minus the Unselect dialog pops up.
I'm using iTerm2 and Midnight commander via Homebrew.

Ctrl-T is standard hotkey for file selection — http://linux.die.net/man/1/mc.
As for switch/add/substract, just type shift-8 for *, shift-= for + and - for minus.
All this works in MC out of the box.
French layout?
- Press caps lock ⇪.
- Press the é key (that's the 2 on a QWERTY).
- Press caps lock ⇪ again.
But you need to make sure you're using the French layout, and not French - numeric (“Français - numérique”, French flag with “123” beneath it).
Otherwise, you're explicitly asking the system to use the caps lock key as a shift lock for the numbers bar on the top of the keyboard!

You need to edit
~/.config/mc/iniconfig file and look foronly_leading_plus_minusentry. By default it is set tofalsewhich causes this behavior. If you set it totruethen
-will triggerUnselectdialog only if-is the first character you type which pretty much would never be a problem. If you do not haveonly_leading_plus_minusjust add it. Make sure you do not haveAuto save setupenabled in your config and if you do, quit all instances ofmcprior editing yourini.
