First: packages and ports are entirely two separate things. There is no such thing as "packages from ports".
From the FAQ:
Packages are the pre-compiled binaries of some of the most used third

IMPORTANT NOTE: The ports tree is meant for advanced users. Everyone
is encouraged to use the pre-compiled binary packages.
Second: Everything from packages and (especially) ports is considered 3rd party. The OpenBSD developers do not "support" packages or ports - the community does. As far as the OpenBSD project is concerned you are on your own with packages and ports... they're not really part of the OpenBSD project. This means that if they don't go through the normal auditing process or receive security updates through the OpenBSD projects - again they are community supported.
Third: There is no host-based virtualization platform included in OpenBSD that I am aware of (well there's the Linux binary compatibility layer - but that's a fancy kernel land API trick), nor do I ever expect this functionality to be added to OpenBSD. The OpenBSD project has infamously been pretty loathe to adopt virtualization:

No. And there probably never will be. OpenBSD is a fantastic operating system, but it is not a good choice as virtualization host.
If you still want/need to use OpenBSD as a virtualization host, I think QEMU is your only option. It is available as both a package and from the ports tree.
Ideally, you should install the gnome
meta-package to ensure that you have all of the required packages installed, particularly DBus - I'd highly recommend you do that.
Once you've installed the gnome
meta package, follow the post-installation instructions in /usr/local/share/doc/pkg-readme
for the GNOME version you installed (check the file gnome-{version}
where {version}
is the GNOME version).
At a high level you need to do the following post-installation steps (all detailed in the aforementioned instructions):
- Add
dbus_daemon
to pkg_scripts
in /etc/rc.conf.local
and start dbus_daemon
- Configure GDM (which it appears you've done)
- (Optionally) Install
avahi_daemon
and enable multicast by adding multicast_host=YES
to /etc/rc.conf.local
.
If you enable multicast, either restart networking (using /etc/netstart
) or reboot your machine. When you login again (via GDM), you should be using a GNOME desktop.

QEMU is available for BSD, although it looks like you might have to do a little fiddling to get it to go based on NetBSD packages. Here is a guy that got Windows to run in QEMU on OpenBSD.
