Ubuntu – After suspend (lid closed) screen stays black

I have installed Ubuntu Gnome on my Dell XPS15 9550.
I have issues with the suspend mode.
Whenever I close the lid, and then open it again (after a few minutes, to ensure the notebook went into suspend mode), the notebook turns back on, but the screen stays black!
Only solution is always to hard reset the notebook.

I recently installed the 4.4.8 kernel, but it didn't changed anything.

Specifications:

CPU: Intel 6700HQ (skylake)
16GB RAM
Intel integrated graphics
Nvidia 960M dedicated graphics card

I have also installed Fedora 24 previously, and encountered the same problem.
I assume that it has to do with the graphics card(s), maybe optimus bug, but I am not sure.

EDIT:
I tried to login after I opened the lid (because only the screen turns black, but the notebook still works).
So i managed to log in, trough the black screen, and opened a terminal with the shortcut and typed reboot. Success! The notebook restarted.
This leads to the conclusion that only the screen stays black, but the OS is operating normally after waking up.

I had a similar problem, there was an option in my BIOS menu for something along the lines of Open Lid Resume = disabled

I enabled the option and it solved the issue. I was using Fedora on an Acer.

Fedora – Can not suspend when lid closed, even if external display is connected

Assuming the laptop's also plugged into external power; you'd also need to explicitly add the following to /etc/systemd/logind.conf:

HandleLidSwitchExternalPower=suspend

Per man logind.conf

HandleLidSwitchExternalPower= is completely ignored by default (for backwards compatibility) — an explicit value must be set before it will be used to determine behaviour.

If the system is inserted in a docking station, or if more than one display is connected, the action specified by HandleLidSwitchDocked= occurs; if the system is on external power the action (if any) specified by HandleLidSwitchExternalPower= occurs; otherwise the HandleLidSwitch= action occurs.

Linux Mint 18 suspend issue

I've solved this issue by installing new linux kernel "4.5.2-040502-generic" following this guidelines:

Install new kernel (4.5.2):

cd /tmp

wget \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.5.2-wily/linux-headers-4.5.2-040502_4.5.2-040502.201604200335_all.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.5.2-wily/linux-headers-4.5.2-040502-generic_4.5.2-040502.201604200335_amd64.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.5.2-wily/linux-image-4.5.2-040502-generic_4.5.2-040502.201604200335_amd64.deb

sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-4.5*.deb linux-image-4.5*.deb

Reboot your system and try if suspend works.

In case something goes wrong with new kernel (4.5.2) reboot your computer and select Advanced options for Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon 64-bit in boot menu, then select your old kernel (4.4.0-21).
