Terminator doesn’t open new window

Terminator 0.95 (running on Debian stable under Gnome) has shortcuts for "Spawn a new Terminator process" and "Create a new window". However, when I set them (to several different options, in case there is a conflict) and try to use, instead of a new window I get a lightbulb in the header of the current tab. There are no error messages in the terminal I am running Terminator from, but looking again at keybindings, the shortcuts become disabled. Trying to use the shortcut without closing the preferences window didn't work either.

What does it mean and how can I avoid it?

Looking at ~/.config/terminator/config, for some reason it was using <Primary> instead of <Ctrl>. After deleting the keybindings section, the original shortcut Shift+Ctrl+I for new window works.

The answer to this problem for terminator and remote systems is to create a terminator profile, where the command it runs 'as a login shell' is the SSH connection string used to access the remote server. It is prefered to have SSH key based authentication or openssh controlmaster/controlpath setup to have connection sharing.

Exerpt of a terminator config for this:

~/.config/terminator/config

[profiles]
[[default]]
 scroll_on_output = False
 exit_action = restart
 scrollback_infinite = True
[[remotehost]]
 use_custom_command = True
 exit_action = restart
 custom_command = ssh user@remotehost

And simply run terminator -p remotehost to use this profile. Each time you 'split' terminals, it uses this profile and thus opens a new SSH connection.

After spending a decent amount of time looking around, I finally found two solutions starting with the best one mentioned first. I present them for the sake of completeness:

One has to make sure to have the following line in the terminator configuration file: always_split_with_profile = True under the [global_config] section. The same issue was brought up here.
