Detach/Reattach X Application – How to Detach and Reattach an X Application Over SSH

I have a development server that I leave running all the time, and a development laptop that I turn off/on everyday.

I have a GUI application on the server that I'd like to run over SSH -X, and I'd like to leave it running even when my dev laptop is powered off.

Is there a way to detach and then re-attach to that application over SSH -X?

I'd prefer not to use VNC in my case.

If the server you're ssh'ing into has a GUI running you forgo using the -X switch to ssh and set the $DISPLAY variable on the server prior to running the wine application like so:

$ DISPLAY=:0.0 wine Artemis.exe

If on the other hand you do want to see the GUI via ssh then you could try changing the compression used to hopefully speed things up via SSH tunnel.

$ ssh -c arcfour,blowfish-cbc -X wine Artemis.exe

Using these ciphers should significantly speed up your connection.

You can start a VNC server on an existing X server by using x11vnc. However, if you anticipate the need to do this, you may want to use Xvnc instead of Xvfb.
