I have been trying to get my Ubuntu 11.10 laptop to make an access point to connect my blackberry playbook . hostapd gave error

Is this a BCM4312 problem? Can madwifi , hostap create wifi acccess point for me?
Connectify can do this on windows so is there no equivalent??
I had the same issue on my raspberry-PI. I could not find any proper solution but I did come up with a slightly dirty way to solve the issue:
slightly modified solution from "adrianTNT" here on Ask Ubuntu
airmon-ng check
and the process I needed to kill was wpa_supplicant so
killall wpa_supplicant
I had to run this command to successfully start hostapd
hostapd /etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf
instead of the more common way service hostapd start which always failed.
FWIW I'm currently troubleshooting what I believe is a similar problem. I am using the built-in wireless interface on a RPi4 (2GB RAM) with hostapd + dnsmasq. It seems to work fine when I specify a channel manually, but when I try to auto-select an optimal channel it fails (somewhat silently). If I enable lots of debug logging I can see the following output, which suggests to me that there's something broken between the code that's measuring the survey data and the part that connects it to hostapd.
In lieu of a better solution, I wrote a NodeJS script to select a channel number and posted it here.

I'm able to use iwlist wlan0 scanning or wavemon to see other APs, etc.
