Fixing xsession-errors on Linux Mint 17.2

here's the deal. I had installed this afternoon pulse audio manager for trying to fix a no sound issue with an HDMI cable, the issue wasn't solved so I figured out I wouldn't need pulse audio manager since Mint has alsa as default, so for avoiding possible conflicts I uninstalled pulse audio manager by just right clicking on the Cinnamon menu. After that I did a reinstall of alsa since it wasn't properly recognizing my headphones when plugged in and thus playing music in my laptop speakers and headphones at the same time. So here's when it gets really good, I reboot my laptop and behold this message:

Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of diskspace. Try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem.

And then this 'details' message appeared in a box

mdm[2038]: GLib-CRITICAL: g-key-file-free: assertion 'key file !=NULL' failed

So far I have tried Clem's solution for manjaro , installing lightdm, reinstalling grub (stupid move since it has nothing to do with MDM), reinstalling MDM, forcing MDM's reload and nothing has worked, I still get no access to my DE. I can only work from the TTY. Again I'm using Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon and so sorry for the bad English, it's 3 am here and I've been battling with this issue for five straight hours.
Note: I'm not out of diskspace since I have more than 100 GB of free space, I've checked this when reinstalling grub using the Gparted installed within Boot-Repair-Disk

The solution: Ctrl+Alt+F1 then login and:

sudo apt-get install cinnamon
sudo reboot

Partial answer:

I looked at the ALC 1220 patch, and it just adds the same fixup as for the ALC 882 (which is used by quite a number of codecs).

But your problem seems to be that the communication with the Codec chip doesn't work at all. The soundcard driver snd_hda_intel loads, gets a single timeout error, but not the second one, so something works, but then it can't find any codec. So it never reaches the stage where the patch would be relevant.

Ideas:

1) Look in the BIOS if there are any settings for the soundcard. Maybe changing something here will make codec communication work.

2) The HD-Audio.txt says you can force probing if the BIOS is broken:

On a machine with a broken BIOS, sometimes you need to force the driver to probe the codec slots the hardware doesn't report for use. In such a case, turn the bit 8 (0x100) of probe_mask option on. Then the rest 8 bits are passed as the codec slots to probe unconditionally. For example, probe_mask=0x103 will force to probe the codec slots 0 and 1 no matter what the hardware reports.

So try as root

modprobe -r snd_hda_intel
modprobe snd_hda_intel probe_mask=0x1ff

and see what happens in dmesg.

3) If nothing helps, file a bug with the ALSA developers and see if they have any idea.

I wish I understood better what the problem is, but whne it comes to headphone profiles I have no experience or knowledge. All I know is that it came down to "in order for a microphone to work, you need phonesim -- but Ubuntu 20 dropped support for phonesim, so you need to install it from a third-party repository". One caveat that I'm still working through (and Googling which led me to your question): After I followed all of the steps I was able to select HSP/HFP and use my mic... For 5 minutes. Then it reverted to A2DP and wouldn't let me switch back. I found (through random clicking and experimenting) that if I restarted pulseaudio again (pulseaudio -k in the terminal) then I was back to HSP/HFP mode... for 5 more minutes

I'm trying to make sense of why this is happening and I'll update the answer once I've figured out, but hopefully this link will get you started in the right direction.
