Linux – Switching on numlock by default in Linux Mint

Whenever I boot in to Linux Mint the NumLock is switched off by default. As my username consists of some numbers, I need to switch on NumLock each time. I want it to be switched on by default each time I log in.

I had a look at the following question but could not find the conf file that the author is talking about:

I dual boot with Windows XP and Linux Mint 14 Mate using the default US Keyboard Layout.

in Linux Mint, this is easy:
1. open up 'keyboard' in settings
2. click on the 'Layouts' tab
3. click on 'Options...'
4. Under 'Miscellaneous compatibility options' there are many helpful options, including:

Default numeric keypad keys
Numeric keypad keys always enter digits (as in Mac OS)

I have actually been able to solve this once and for all with another way:

But actually it is as easy as calling:

# the program `numlockx`  is from the package `numlockx`
# the program `setxkbmap` is from the package `x11-xkb-utils`

numlockx on
setxkbmap -option numpad:mac

after your GUI login. I myself am using it, and it's working flawlessly.

Disable num lock indicator LED or reverse keypad so when num lock is on, indicator light is off

If “num lock turned on by default” means “keys on the numpad by default” and you don’t want/don’t care about navigation on the keypad:

setxkbmap -option numpad:mac <layout>

So for the us layout:

setxkbmap -option numpad:mac us

Now the numpad always enters digits, no matter the num lock state.
