Linux – Set default sound card in Pulse Audio

I have two soundcards on my systems and pulseaudio always picks the wrong one. How do I set up the default soundcard in the pulse audio preferences?

Install pavucontrol and on the Output devices tab, toggle the "Check" button next to the little lock, on the device you want to mark as the default. Same for Input devices.

It seems like I found a solution, at least for this particular case. Since I knew the card and device number assigned by ALSA, I just had to open /etc/pulse/default.pa. in editor and change this line

#load-module module-alsa-sink

into this

load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:2,7

where 2 and 7 are my particular instances of card and device numbers. This created a new sink connected to the correct device, which was then used as the default output.

Default sound volume for all ALSA devices

There are some generic and driver-specific config files in /usr/share/alsa/init/, where you can specify settings like ENV{ppercent}:="75%" and ENV{pvolume}:="-20dB" (pvolume = playback volume, cvolume = capture volume, etc.). /usr/share/alsa/init/default should already contain those settings, so you can use it as an example.

You can force ALSA to re-initialize all devices with alsactl init and can also override the default configuration files for that with alsactl -i /usr/share/alsa/init/foo init.

For some reason, ALSA seems to ignore the ppercent and pvolume settings on my system, but from your comments it seems like they worked for you. If anyone can enlighten me on why the configuration might be ignored, I'd be glad to amend this answer.
